Labour for a Republic has just enjoyed a very successful few days at Labour’s Annual Conference in Liverpool. Throughout the conference, our volunteers at our exhibition stand were kept busy by delegates and visitors, including some quite prominent Party members, wanting to know more about our campaigns and expressing their support for the positions we have taken. Over 80 new supporters joined our mailing list.
This conference was much more upbeat than those of recent years, with a new PM determined to regain the trust of electors by doing politics differently and by making a difference in all parts of society. Our message to the Party was that winning back trust will be easier with a clear commitment to the values of republicanism: our approach must recognise that everyone should be regarded as being of equal worth and that citizens, collectively, should be the paramount authority in the state – and when people are sovereign, there is no need for a sovereign monarch.
Although support for the monarchy is declining, we know that more needs to be done to prepare the ground for a change to an elected head of state. That’s why we want a serious discussion of republicanism within the Party and why we want to get speakers to as many CLPs as possible.
