There are high hopes that a change in Labour’s leadership will lead to a party that is more open to discussion on what it stands for and on alternative policy options. The external political and economic environment will not, of course, change quickly, and we cannot expect a sudden wave of radicalism. We can, however, hope for a new culture within the Party that allows a reasoned discussion on our constitution, including on the nature of our head of state and how it affects the type of society we live in.
Earlier this year, the Chartist magazine published ‘Time up for the monarchy’, and article by Labour for a Republic’s Secretary which concluded:
Labour must … make space for debate. Whether or not we have a monarchy is not just about deviant princes and royal extravagance – it is about the sort of society we want to create. Republicanism must not be seen as peripheral to Labour policy but as an essential part of a wider discussion on how our constitution must be reformed if Labour is to deliver on its values.
Can you help us start that debate in your CLP of Labour Party branch? If so, please contact us on secretary@labourforarepublic.org.uk.
‘Time up for the monarchy’ is now available on the Chartist’s website (https://www.chartist.org.uk/time-up-for-the-monarchy/). The Chartist magazine, which describes itself as the bi-monthly political magazine of the democratic left, is well worth its £30 subscription.
